Laura Graves - 08/04/16 - Humble in the Bridle, four year old, behind the bit, counterflexion

Have you struggled with a horse who hangs behind the bridle?  Laura Graves brings us her methods of retraining this difficult issue in this new video featuring a talented four year old new to her training program.  The total running time of this two part video is 34:30.

Video Description

Laura Graves leads this session with this four year old that she is just starting to work with. Their focus of work is on encouraging him in the contact and helping him to be up in the poll and reaching for the bit. He goes quite round and behind the vertical, so the goal is to improve his push from behind and his ability to carry his shoulder. Laura explains why they work without spurs. As they move into the trot, he’s quite behind the bit and Laura discusses her method of teaching the horse how the bit works as a tool so when he pushes they can control where he pushes instead of lifting him with the bit and pushing him at it. They first look for a quick reaction from the hind legs. Laura has the rider put her leg on with a reaction from the horse, and then add a closing hand that gives forward in the release. She talks about how this is a half halt. They avoid lifting the front end with the reins.
