Video Description

Catherine joins us with this enlightening video on how to deal with a horse that is too heavy in the hand. She rides Hotmail, her GP horse who definitely is not too heavy, but she is able to demonstrate techniques to conquer this difficult problem. She begins by talking about the difference between riding the horse down on to the bit and riding them up off of the bit. She first rides him at the walk down on to the bit and talks about the progression of training for a young horse. She demonstrates getting him up off the bit at the walk, and how to correct a horse who’s behind the bit.As they move to the trot Catherine rides him first down into the contact and then demonstrates how to ride him up into more self carriage. She talks about how some riders are afraid to let their horse surge forward and up and then ride defensively, preventing their horse from being able to get lighter.
